A cake is the crowning glory of a celebration that sometimes takes years to plan, this is the last memory your guests leave with for the night. The cutting and eating of the cake signifies the finale to these events, grand or intimate, and you want the last statement to be as breathtaking as the first.
The wedding cake dates back to the early Romans. During that time the cake was actually a thin loaf, more bread than what we know as cake today. It was broken over the brides head, as a symbol of fruitfulness and good fortune. The guests then scrambled for the pieces in hope to secure good luck for themselves.
In Anglo Saxon times guest brought small cakes to the wedding and piled them up and then the wedding couple would try to reach over it and kiss. This is how the French got the concept of making the wedding cake tiered. The tiered cake symbolizes prosperity and has become a popular style in today's modern wedding.
The European style of wedding cake is mostly white, as a symbol of purity. Today's bride demands more colors and flavors to her cake. It seems that the traditional white wedding cake is still very popular here in the Austin area. I guess we like to stick to our traditions.
